Final homestudy meeting

Now we wait for the social worker to type up our homestudy. We have to provide her with a note from our 2nd son's doctor, because he has a heart defect. (not sure why this matters, but we will do so). She said it could take up to a month to put the homestudy draft together.

I have been thinking about the transitional objects. I found a nice soft album on Amazon that seems perfect at http://amzn.com/B000GKW6CY It holds 12 pictures.

I also think a build-a-bear with our voices recorded on it, seems like a good idea. The social worker suggested a blanket, but I like the soft doll idea better, since I'm sure the children all share blankets.

I am sending some of our papers to Michigan to get those apstilled this week. The Illinois papers will have to wait for the completed homestudy.

I hung some pictures of prairie flowers in her room last night. Our 2 oldest boys' room is done in a forest theme, our baby boy has a swamp/marsh theme, and she will have a prairie theme. David explored the doll house designs at Hobby Lobby today! So it's not just me who is jumping the gun a bit with the thoughts of a daughter joining the family.

  1. Hasn't it been a month already?

I love the marsh/swamp theme, that sounds really cool!

I think it's great that you're already decorating in a prairie theme for her. It's fun to see what everyone is doing. You know you are going to have a girl, Lee and Martha accepted one of each! We don't even know if we will have one or two, let alone boy/girl. This is just as exciting as pregnancy, right?

Stay on top of that agency. I have already read too many blogs of parents that have been forgotten about. YIKES!

  2. May I suggest a combination between the blanket and the plush animal? It's called a zoobie pet. It was Santa's gifts to our children three days after court date. They STILL sleep and play with them. I got a turtle, a monkey and a lion. It's a plush animal that can be a pillow, and when you unzip it you take out a blanket. It's adorable and soft. The kid can carry it around all day and sleep with it at night. This was particularly useful on the plane ride back!

Here's one website that shows you what it looks like, but I didn't find the website for the one we bought. I just know it's called zoobie pets.

  3. Love the room ideas and the cloth book. The build a bear is a good idea too. They had something similar in Poland and we made a lion there (named it after his physical therapist in Poland) before coming home.

I remember very well the specifics that were asked of us and how strange and frustrating they seemed. I tried 3 times to get my doctor's office to hand copy information from my physical form to new forms. They kept screwing it up. Each form had something different than the previous, weight, height, blood pressure, you name it. I finally had to get the forms, hand copy the information and take it back to my doctor and have her sign them...then I switched doctors.

But, as you stated, the reason why we follow through with the specifics is because we have to. We can't share the love that we have to share without crossing a 't' on a seemingly nonsensical heart condition form, or dotting an 'i' (three 'i's) on physical forms. So we do it, gladly.

My family was one who was forgotten by their adoption agency. It was too late to file an extenstion for the I-600A so we had to do it all over again. It almost cost us our son. Our agent had our son's referral for a few months (don't know why she didn't give it to someone else), and wasn't planning on giving it to us because of our paperwork issues (she mentioned him, but we were never offered the referral). The only reason why she let us look at it is because she said I kept bugging her about it. All I can muster up to explain it is that it was fated.

Lesson, stay on top of your expiration dates and give yourself plenty of time to request an extension if need be.

  4. My husband and I are also in the process of adopting a little one from Poland. We just had our last home study visit on Sunday and our Social Worker e-mailed us today that she had the rough draft done and is sending it to our international agency. I would definitely stay on your social worker. We had our first visit on 10-28, second visit on 11-1 and she is done. Maybe call them and ask them why it is going to take so long.

I also found a picture book online that you can check out, it is a company called One Step Ahead, they have some great products. The link is http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=534244&cmSource=Search . They also have some soft blocks that you can put pictures in. I am going to order them and put pictures of extended family in them so he can get used to his cousins faces before he comes home. I would definitely check out the site. They have some products to make travel easier like the ride on carry on bag (deluxe trunki) and many other products.

    Good Luck!
